TRANSITION TOWNS is a wonderful experiment in community action.

'The Transition Movement is an increasingly global movement which seeks to inspire, catalyze and support community responses to Peak Oil and Climate Change. It is positive and solutions-focused, and is developing a diversity of tools for building resilience and happiness around the world. From awareness-raising and local food groups, to creating local currencies and developing ‘Plan Bs’ for their communities, Transition movement seeks to embrace the end of the Oil Age as being a tremendous opportunity – the opportunity for a profound rethink of much that we have come to take for granted.' ( from the 'Transition Timeline'). The movement started in England and has "gone viral" - it is now represented in countries around the globe and gaining ground rapidly.

OFFICIAL TRANSITION TOWN CRITERIA
Why criteria were necessary?
Official status is 'granted' by the founders of the movement because trustees and funders wanted to actively nurture embryonic projects, but give 'official' status only to those really ready to move into the awareness raising stage.

Benefits of Becoming 'Official':
Additional levels of support such as speakers, trainings, wiki and forums, guidance, materials, web space, training and networking opportunities.

Criteria to be 'Official' :

understanding of peak oil and climate change as twin drivers (& written in governing documents)
a group of 4-5 people willing to step into leadership roles (not just 1)
at least two people from the core team willing to attend an initial two day training course.
a potentially strong connection to the local council
an initial understanding of the 12 steps to becoming a Transition Town
a commitment to ask for help when needed
a commitment to regularly update your web presence - either the wiki or your own website
a commitment to make periodic contributions to the Transition Towns blog
a commitment to give at least two presentations to other communities considering Transition Towns
a commitment to network with other Transition Towns
a commitment to work cooperatively with neighboring Transition Towns
minimal conflicts of interests in the core team
a commitment to work with the Transition Network re:national grant applications
a commitment to strive for inclusivity across your entire initiative (with, for instance, the UN Declaration of Human Rights as part of constitution so extreme political groups with discrimination as a key value cannot participate in the decision making
recommendation at least one person attends a permaculture design course
a recognition that the first place for you to start is in your local community
criteria also apply to initiating/coordinating hubs – these can be discussed person to person
